In my classroom we actually do activities similar to this one in which students organize and graph data using Microsoft Excel. We have office on every computer in our school, but this could be a good resource for students who do not have it at home.

Photo Editing Activity

I teach World Geography and could actually use this assignment just as I did here to edit different photos of interesting places. I choose the city of Dubai, which is in the United Arab Emirates. This is one of the coolest cities in the world as Dubai has decided to spend their oil money to bring in tourists because they understand that one day their oil money will run out.

Wikipedia Comparison

For this assignment I chose to look at my favorite baseball team, the 2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox. When looking at the Wikipedia article, I noticed that the article is very lengthy and the information was obviously posted by White Sox fans like myself. The opening paragraph is a brief overview of the team and their history and then the article goes into different sections based on 3 to 5 year periods. It is obvious that there is some bias towards the White Sox, as there are even a few friendly jabs at the White Sox biggest rival, the hated Chicago Cubs.

When looking at the simple English version, the article is less than 400 words. It basically states they are a baseball team that plays in the American League in Chicago, Illinois.

I was even more surprised to see that the Britannica article was shorter than the simple English version. The Britannica article did not state anything about the team's history or success. The article simply stated that the White Sox are a Major League Baseball team.
